Back-to-school time is right around the corner! It is important to make sure that your children kick off the new school year in the healthiest way possible. Maryland Health Connection offers these three tips:
- Schedule your child’s school or sports physical now. Routine physicals are covered by your health plan and are required before participation in sports activities and prior to entrance to many schools. These exams will ensure that your child is healthy and prepared to take on the new school year. First, try scheduling an appointment with your primary care doctor, since physicals are covered under your insurance plan. In a pinch, an urgent care center also will be able to do a physical exam.
- Make sure flu shots/immunizations are up to date. Immunizations and flu shots help protect your child against various illnesses. It’s important to note that these are covered by your health plan at no extra cost, regardless of your deductible.
- Utilize pediatric vision benefits. About 80 percent of learning at school is visual. Your health insurance plan’s pediatric vision benefits cover children up to age 19 and include a routine eye examination, a pair of prescription eye lenses, and a frame each year.
Student health is strongly linked to success in the classroom. Taking the necessary before-school measures will ensure that your child is healthy and ready to learn.
By scheduling school physicals, making sure immunizations are up to date, and utilizing pediatric vision benefits, you can feel confident that the school year will be off to a smooth start. Click here to see five more tips for a healthy back-to-school time.
