Your Taxes: Next Steps for Forms 1095-A and 1095-B

If you were enrolled in health coverage through Maryland Health Connection during 2017, you will be filing your federal taxes using form 1095-A or 1095-B.   

Both 1095-A and 1095-B forms will be mailed by Jan. 31. Only form 1095-A will be available in online accounts.

What is Form 1095-A?

Form 1095-A is an IRS tax form that serves as proof that you and members of your family met the requirement under the Affordable Care Act to have health insurance coverage. You will receive Form 1095-A if you were enrolled in a qualified health plan through Maryland Health Connection.

Do I use Form 1095-A if I received financial help?

If you received financial help with your plan, you will use this form to complete IRS Form 8962 (Premium Tax Credit). The information from these forms helps make sure you received the right amount of tax credit for your health insurance plan. Important: if your income changed during 2017, report this information to Maryland Health Connection immediately. If you received more credits than your household was eligible for, you may be required to pay back some of the credits you received. If you received less, this amount may be refunded to you or used to reduce any other income tax you might owe. Remember, you must reconcile your tax credits each year to be eligible to receive tax credits the following year.

What is Form 1095-B?

Form 1095-B is an IRS tax form that proves you or a member of your household received Medicaid or Maryland Children’s Health Program (MCHP) health coverage during the previous year. In this case, your form will reflect year 2017.

What do I do with these forms?

Validate the information on the form. Check the names of household members enrolled, their information and dates they had health coverage. If you think the information shown on your form is wrong (or if you need another copy of the form), call Maryland Health Connection at 1-855-642-8572 (Deaf and hard of hearing use Relay service).

Someone in my household had coverage through an employer.

If anyone in your household was enrolled in health coverage through their employer, you will receive a separate Form 1095-C with instructions.
