Deadline is Soon for February 1 Health Insurance Coverage

New Year, new you! You’ve set out to accomplish some goals this year. If your list includes hitting the weights, clean eating or becoming a healthier version of yourself, make sure signing up for health coverage is on there too! Regular checkups and dental cleanings contribute to your well-being, and avoiding unexpected medical bills also protects your financial health.

You can sign up by January 15 through MarylandHealthConnection.gov to have health or dental insurance that starts February 1.

Nine out of 10 people enrolled are saving money.
You might qualify for financial help like a premium tax credit or reduced out-of-pocket costs, so you pay less for coverage, or you may even qualify for free coverage through Medicaid.

Nine out of 10 people who enrolled qualified for lower costs. Get started today, and see what you could save.

Am I still required to have health coverage?
Yes: under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which remains the law of the land in Maryland, most people must have “minimum essential coverage” or will have to pay a penalty when they file their federal taxes. Health coverage consists of Medicaid, the Maryland Children’s Health Program (MCHP), MCHP Premium, coverage through an employer, Medicare, a health plan through Maryland Health Connection or a health plan through the individual or small group markets.

The deadline to get a 2017 health plan is January 31, with coverage starting March 1. Enrollment is open year-round for people who qualify for Medicaid or MCHP.

It’s time to enroll. Now what?
