Five healthy back to school tips

(with a little help from our friends)

It’s back-to-school time! As your kiddos head back to class, it’s important to protect them from germs and illnesses so nothing gets in the way of learning.

Fortunately, health insurance plans through Maryland Health Connection cover flu shots and other immunizations, plus other care like checkups, hospitalizations and prescriptions.

Our friends on Twitter have some good advice of their own to help with a smoother start to the school year:

1) Hand-washing helps keep those germs at bay.

Your kids might argue that the worst part of lunchtime is hand-washing. But at least the best part is dessert (except when you get only yellow gummies-- right, @RexxieCat?)

Here are some do’s and don’t of handwashing and hand sanitizer use from @CDCgov: https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/index.html.

2) Reading helps kids’ minds stay healthy, too!

If you live near Baltimore County, plan a reading date with your little one at Baltimore County Public Library (@bcplinfo) during Library Card Sign-up Month in September.

Check out your local Maryland library for similar activities! Many locations offer free weekend activities -- and while you’re there, catch up on our blog for tips on signing up for a health plan this year (open enrollment is Nov. 1 to Dec. 15 for 2018 plans).

3) Mom and Dad, it’s OK to shed a few tears.

It’s hard to hold back the tears when you send your child to their first day of school! Jenny the Voice (@JennyTheVoice) took this rite of passage and turned it into an adorable and fun picture.

Does your family speak Spanish, too? Check out our site en español for information on signing up for a health plan this fall to protect your family: https://www.marylandhealthconnection.gov/espanol.

4) Nothing helps with a smooth start to the year like getting organized.

We can all relate to that feeling when you organize your library over the summer only to know that it’ll look like the “before” picture by June. Wishing you a great first week back in school, @GrangeES!

If you plan to enroll in health coverage this year, it’s also important to organize your documents so you can breeze through applying. Here’s what you’ll need to have handy: https://www.marylandhealthconnection.gov/how-to-enroll/get-ready-to-apply.

5) The boys (and girls) of summer may be able to get coverage now.

The boys (and girls) are back in town! Make sure to get them covered before they come home with any bumps and bruises from the playground.

Our friends at Men’s Health Network (@MensHlthNetwork) remind you that kids can get health insurance year-round if they qualify for Medicaid or the Maryland Children’s Health Program, or if your family recently experienced certain life events.
