Get Ready to Apply for Health Coverage through Maryland Health Connection

It's Time to Enroll Graphic

Open Enrollment has started! For those of you new to the crowd, this is the time of year you can apply for affordable health coverage and dental plans through Maryland Health Connection or change plans. Open Enrollment for private health and dental plans is November 1 to January 31, although you can enroll any time of year if you’re eligible for Medicaid or have a major life event.

Items Needed to Apply

If you are all set to apply for a plan, here are some items to have on-hand:

  • Birth dates for each household member applying for coverage
  • Social Security numbers or document numbers for each household member applying for coverage, if they have an SSN or other document number
  • Employer and income information for everyone in your household (including pay stubs, W-2 forms or tax forms)
  • Citizenship or immigration information for anyone applying for coverage
  • Information about any job-related health insurance available to your household
  • Policy numbers for any current health insurance
  • Photo ID, if you’re applying in person

Other Ways to Get Ready

We ask about income and other information to let you know what coverage you qualify for and if you can get help paying for it. We keep the information you provide private and secure, as required by law.

Learn about the types of income you should include when you apply, such as:

  • Wages, salaries, and tips
  • Net income from any self-employment or business (generally the amount of money you take in from your business minus your business expenses)
  • Unemployment compensation
  • Social Security payments, including disability payments even if the payments are not taxed by the IRS — but do not include Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Alimony

If you don’t know what your income will be next year, you should make your best estimate. Maryland Health Connection will compare your estimated income against documented records, and we may ask you to provide income documentation to support your projections.

Learn who to include in your household when you apply, like these people below:

  • Yourself
  • Your spouse
  • Your children who live with you, even if they make enough money to file a tax return themselves
  • Your unmarried partner who needs health coverage
  • Anyone you include on your tax return as a dependent, even if they don’t live with you
  • Any relative under 21 who you take care of and lives with you.

What’s new? It’s important to tell us when you’ve had a change in your income or household size. If your information isn’t current and you receive too much financial help, you may have owe that money when you file your taxes for the year.
