Health Coverage for Deaf & Hard of Hearing Individuals

In helping connect as many Marylanders as possible with quality health coverage, we’ve created new resources designed for Maryland residents who are deaf and hard of hearing.

With support from the Governor’s Office of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing, Maryland Health Connection has videos available in American Sign Language to help individuals whose primary language is ASL to understand and navigate the health insurance enrollment process.

In addition, our online health coverage application now includes ASL as a primary language option to help provide the best customer service for consumers from their insurance company.

Are you deaf or hard of hearing and looking for a health insurance plan? Here are three videos to help you navigate the process.

More videos are available on our Maryland Connect YouTube channel with closed captioning. You can also get help with health coverage questions or enrollment by calling our TTY line at 1-855-642-8573, or our main phone line at 1-855-642-8572, which also accepts relay calls if you use videophone.

Pick the right plan for you.

You cannot be denied coverage or charged more for medical coverage if you have a pre-existing condition.

You may be eligible for a tax credit.

Based on your household income, you may qualify for an advanced payment of the premium tax credit that lowers your premium (the amount you pay each month to your insurance plan).

We’re here to help.

If you would like in-person assistance enrolling in health coverage or understanding your options, many of our consumer assistance organizations offer certified interpreters to help you with the enrollment process.

In addition, our community assistance partners work with groups including the Deaf Independent Living Association in Salisbury and the Commission on People with Disabilities in Rockville to serve members of these communities.
