Maryland Mom Sarah L. Uses Her Coverage Often

health plansGrowing up, Sarah L. had learned the benefits of health insurance from her parents. When the Affordable Care Act was passed, she was happy to learn that 10 essential benefits must be covered by all plans through Maryland Health Connection. It gave her peace of mind to start a family, knowing they’d be taken care of. Sarah got pregnant with her first son and applied for a health plan. Today, the Glen Burnie resident has Medicaid and is grateful for the coverage it has provided on many occasions.

When Sarah’s son was born, he was in and out of the hospital with pneumonia. The now mother of two remarked how she and her husband would still be paying for his overnight stays today, 13 years later, if she didn’t have health coverage. Sarah’s two boys are both on medication for ADHD and asthma. She said, “If it weren’t for our health insurance through Maryland Health Connection, we wouldn’t be able to afford a lot of the necessities. We would forgo food just to be able to afford my boys’ medication out of pocket.”

Sarah’s coverage has also benefited her own health. After she had her second son, the hospital sent her home two days after her C-section. She had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. When she arrived home, she was feeling bad and wasn’t able to focus on the joy of having another newborn. Her husband took her back to hospital and she had a seizure. Hospital staff put her in a medically induced coma to save her life. Sarah now says she couldn’t imagine the cost of this event without health insurance.

Sarah wants to let Marylanders know how easy it is to sign up for a health plan through Maryland Health Connection. The application can be completed online, through the mobile app, or in person at one of our partner locations. She loves the mobile app because it allows her to take a picture and upload verification documents right through her phone.

When asked why Marylanders should get health insurance Sarah said, “It saves your life- without having access to health insurance, most people won’t go to the doctor. Most people won’t get help when they have symptoms. Health insurance gives people the ability to get the care they need.”
