Number of Marylanders without health coverage dropped by 35% between 2013 and 2015, health researchers report

The number of Marylanders without health insurance dropped 35 percent between 2013 and 2015, according to a recent analysis by an organization that studies health data.

The study by SHADAC -- the State Health Access Data Assistance Center -- also examined changes in uninsured rates across Maryland by Congressional district.

The largest improvement among the state’s eight Congressional districts was a nearly 54 percent decrease in uninsured in the 1st Congressional District. The district covers all of the state’s Eastern Shore as well as parts of Baltimore, Harford and Carroll counties and has a median income of nearly $52,000.

The smallest decline in the uninsured during 2013-2015 was 26 percent in the 8th Congressional District, which stretches from the northern D.C. suburbs toward the Pennsylvania border and has a median income of $97,000.

SHADAC, a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and part of the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota, also analyzed changes in the uninsured rate during that time frame by income, employment status, race, ethnicity, nativity and U.S. citizenship, and educational levels. It used data from the American Community Survey (ACS) of the U.S. Census Bureau. SHADAC’s analysis was funded with a grant from the California HealthCare Foundation.
