Sarah, Harford County
Sarah cuts, colors, and styles hair at a well-known beauty salon. She is spunky and productive, going to school part-time in addition to her job. Sarah said she is grateful to have Medicaid because she can keep a job she loves and take advantage of benefits included in all Medicaid health plans, such as mental health visits and wellness check-ups.
Sarah needs health insurance so she can see various physicians to manage severe migraines and depression. She has been seeing a neurologist since she was 12 years old and continues to get the preventive care she needs to function every day ━ her pain and mental health issues make it difficult to work or go to school if she does not receive proper treatment. Sarah says it doesn’t help that “one ignites the other,” meaning the migraines lead to depression. Having Medicaid through Maryland Health Connection is essential for her care because doctor visits, treatments, and prescriptions are covered. “I could not afford to see my doctors and maintain my health without the financial help my insurance plan provides,” Sarah noted.
Sarah is no stranger to enrolling in health coverage. When Maryland Health Connection spoke with her about enrollment this year into a Medicaid plan, she said: “Re-enrolling every year is very easy. I downloaded the mobile app [Enroll MHC] and applied through it, and then I helped my younger sister enroll online.”
Enrollment in Medicaid programs is open all year long. The deadline that just passed does not apply to Medicaid ━ you can still enroll today. If you are a Medicaid recipient, you will receive a letter in the mail letting you know when you need to renew. This will happen once a year, because you will re-enroll every 12 months from the month your coverage begins. If you are eligible for Medicaid, the Maryland Children’s Health Program (MCHP) or MCHP Premium and you have outstanding verification documents, in most cases your renewal application is pending. You cannot obtain services until you submit your outstanding verifications, and your coverage has been approved.
