About Catastrophic Plans
“Catastrophic” health plans through Maryland Health Connection protect you from very high medical costs in the event of an illness or injury. They are among the least expensive plans, but you generally are required to pay all of your medical costs up to a certain amount.
Who qualifies to buy a Catastrophic plan?
You may buy a Catastrophic plan if you are under 30, or if you have qualified for a hardship or affordability exemption, regardless of age.
When you apply, you’ll see Catastrophic plans listed as an option only if you qualify.
How is Catastrophic coverage different from other plans?
- You will likely have to pay all of your medical costs up to a certain amount, usually several thousand dollars. Costs for Essential Health Benefits above that amount are usually paid by the insurance company.
- Catastrophic plans cover three primary care visits per year at no cost. They also include free preventive benefits.
- Unlike other plans, if you enroll in a Catastrophic plan you won’t be eligible for tax credits that may lower your premium costs or for other savings.
