Top Tips for a Healthy Summer

Summer is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy activities with family and friends. Follow these tips from Maryland Health Connection to be sure you enjoy fun in the sun safely.

1. Drink water:

While you’re filling your days with fun activities, remember to stay hydrated. While recommendations vary on exactly how much to drink, eight 8-ounce glasses is a safe start. Need a change? Try infusing your water with fruit or cucumbers!

2. Protect your skin:

A day on the beach should mean relaxation and fun. Be sure you apply sunscreen and lip balm with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply at least every two hours, as well as after swimming or sweating. Protect your eyes too! Wear sunglasses that offer UV protection. Limit direct exposure to the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.when UV rays are strongest. If you do get burned and experience severe pain, blisters, or a fever, seek medical attention.

3. Protect yourself against bugs and poisonous plants:

Outdoor activities like gardening and hiking are great ways to get exercise and fresh air. However, while you’re embracing your green thumb, watch out for poison ivy, sumac and oak. Lower your risk of exposure by wearing protective clothing. Long pants, shirts, gardening gloves, and protective bug sprays will keep you itch-free.

Always be prepared for the unexpected, and use your health coverage when you need it. Remember that doctor visits, hospitalizations, emergency care, and preventive care are covered by your Maryland Health Connection plan. Have a safe and healthy summer!
