More of Your Voices: Coverage Matters to Maryland Families

With just days left until the January 31 deadline for 2017 coverage, you’ve been sharing your own story of how coverage matters to you and your family.

We’ve talked with Marylanders who need coverage because of life-threatening illnesses or to access important preventive care, many who are saving money with the help of financial assistance like tax credits, and others who value the peace of mind of protecting their loved ones from the unexpected.

We're sharing some of their stories this week. You can also tell us yours, and hear from more Marylanders like you.

Enrollee ButlerButler P. of Columbia got coverage that helps him get potentially lifesaving preventive care at no added cost.
Columbia resident Butler knows the danger of putting off preventive care. His wife had delayed getting a colonoscopy until age 58, and she was quickly diagnosed with colon cancer. She is now in Stage 4 progression of the disease and battling for her life, he said.

Butler, 59, visited Celebration Church in Columbia to enroll in a plan before the January 31 deadline. He worked with Door to HealthCare navigator Pat to evaluate his health plan options and choose one during the Extol & Enroll health initiative held Jan. 21-22 at churches throughout Maryland. A tax credit will reduce his monthly cost by more than $200.

Although Butler, a ballroom dancer, is in excellent health and rarely needs to see a doctor, he compared the importance of health insurance to needing car insurance even if you haven't been in an accident. "I don't want to be squashed like a bug on a windshield and then someone else has to foot the bill for it," he said.

Monica N. of Windsor Mill is relieved her son has no-cost coverage for expensive medications.
Monica is thankful her son, 26, was able to get no-cost health coverage after he completed Job Corps, but his insurance didn’t cover expensive medications. "What am I gonna do?" she wondered.

The family doesn't have a car, so they borrowed one to visit the Reisterstown office of HealthCare Access Maryland and worked with navigator Chardaye to get enrolled in 25 minutes.

Once Monica’s son was enrolled, he paid just $1 each for his seven different medications. "All of it was worth it, every last minute was worth it," she said. "My son really needed health care, and he got it in one day. He was so fortunate. I'm very, very proud of what you guys did for him. I hugged everyone there, we were so happy."

KarenKaren B. from Baltimore got insurance as a new Marylander.
Karen recently moved to Maryland from Michigan to help her daughter save money on the child care costs for her baby. Karen said she’d always been employed and had health insurance through her employers.

Since her move, Karen has been uninsured and her daughter encouraged her to apply for coverage through Maryland Health Connection. She visited the Empowerment Temple during the Extol & Enroll initiative on Jan. 22 and worked with HCAM staff to get enrolled.

Charlene and RodneyCharlene and Rodney from Baltimore got covered to take care of themselves.
Charlene and Rodney are “both self-employed and healthy!” They put off getting health insurance coverage because of the costs. Now that their businesses are doing well, they were ready to take the step to take care of themselves by getting covered.

Charlene and Rodney visited the Empowerment Temple during the Extol & Enroll initiative on Jan. 22 and worked with navigator Paris Jordan from Healthcare Access Maryland to enroll in a plan.
