Renew or Change Your Health Plan

Renewals Postcard

If you have a qualified health plan through Maryland Health Connection, you can update or renew your plan Nov. 1 – Dec. 15.

A notice in the mail or your online account will explain if you need to choose a new plan or take any special steps to avoid losing coverage. Otherwise, you will be automatically renewed into your current plan or similar coverage.

Your important next steps:

Step 1 Graphic

Update your Maryland Health Connection application.

Review your information at MarylandHealthConnection.gov carefully, and use the “Change My Information” button if anything has changed.

If you don’t update your income and household information, your premium tax credit and other savings could be wrong.

Decide if you want to stay enrolled in this plan or choose a different one.

Plans and prices change every year. You may find a plan that is better for you and your family this year, especially if your current plan’s premium increased or you’ve had or expect income or household changes.

If you’re changing plans, be sure to check with your doctor to be sure they accept the new plan, so you pay less for services.

Medicaid and MCHP renewals

If anyone in your household is enrolled in Medicaid or the Maryland Children’s Health Program (MCHP), they do not need to take any action during the open enrollment period unless they have received a notice telling them to renew coverage. Medicaid/MCHP enrollees generally renew coverage every 12 months.

How do I change plans or report a change in my information?

Log into your account at MarylandHealthConnection.gov, and use the “Change My Information” quick link. You should review the information carefully, make any changes needed, and then proceed through the rest of the application to complete the enrollment process.

You should make any changes by Dec.15 for them to be applied effective Jan.1. Any changes you make to your application this year may also affect your eligibility for coverage and financial help next year.

(If any family members are covered through Medicaid, be sure to state in your application that they are applying for health coverage so that their coverage is not canceled.)

Monthly billing

If you change insurance companies through Maryland Health Connection, you do not need to call to cancel your old plan, but you should stop automatic debits of your monthly bill before the end of the year, after you pay your December premium.

When will my new plan start?

Your new coverage will begin January 1.

What if I want to end my health insurance coverage through Maryland Health Connection?

If you no longer want to be enrolled in any plan through Maryland Health Connection (or Medicaid if you were found eligible), log into your account at MarylandHealthConnection.gov between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31 to select “End My Coverage”. It’s important to cancel your plan or you may be responsible for bills next year.

Please note, if you were renewed into coverage for January 1 and want a different plan, be sure to change plans by December 15 using the "Change My Information" link on your account homepage.
